Writing an expository essay
What is an expository essay?
It´s not difficult to define expository essays: They are fact-based essays that present a topic in a fair and logical manner. The objective is to convey information to the reader based on fact and without reference to personal opinion or assumptions.
Writing expository essays is easier said than done therefore it is of vital importance to do your research beforehand so that you are fully aware of all the facts available to you.
Expository essays should be written using evidence from three different categories:
- Expert opinion
- Statistics
- Examples from real life or studies
The more of these you use, the stronger your essay will be.
What are some types of expository essays?
There are some different types of evidence to present. It could be one of the following:
- Cause and effect relationships
- Description
- Step by step processes
- Autobiographical

Here is a summary of the sections you should include in this type of essay:
- An Introductory paragraph which gets the reader´s attention. It could be in the form of a powerful quote, definition or fact. It´s probably better to include all of these. This paragraph should end with a statement that you will explain throughout.
- The main body where you will go into detail regarding facts, expert opinion and examples from real life or studies in three paragraphs.
- A conclusion which restates the arguments from the main body and the thesis statement.
Basically, the expository essay structure is very important to the reading of the paper. Without a structure, the evidence will lose its meaning, the reader will become confused, and that is definitely not something you want to happen.
Where can I find an expository essay rubric?
You could use the following points as a guide in your writing. You could even use it as a checklist so as to make sure you have included everything that is necessary, and that you have followed every instruction given:
- Ideas
These are related to the topic you are going to write about. Think about the possibilities for a little while. What interests you? What would you not be bored presenting?
- Thesis
This statement should be clear, relevant and evident initially. It should also tie in with the evidence in the main body and it should be related back to in the conclusion.
- Organization
The paragraphs should flow well and be in the correct order (mentioned above).
- Analysis
The evidence should support the thesis statement throughout. There should be continual reference to it in a relevant manner.
- Grammar and format
There are no grammar, punctuation or spelling mistakes. It´s easily read. All instructions related to spacing, font, margins and page numbers have been followed.
What are some expository essay prompts?
You should really be writing something that interests you because the process of writing it won´t be a pain, it´ll be more of an enjoyable experience, and you´ll have more motivation to write it well if you don´t resent it. There are so many subjects you could write about. The subject you choose will of course depend on the level at which you are writing. A high school paper will be somewhat different to a college paper and vice versa. Look online to generate some prompts to help you get started but remember to be specific in the matter you present in your expository piece.
